George Ward Tjungurrayi was born in the Gibson Desert around the area of Kiwirrkurra in the Gibson Desert and commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1976.
One of the main themes of George’s paintings relates to the “Tingari Cycle” and events associated with “Tingari” are generally of a secret nature and as such limited details are available. However, the Tingari are a group of ancestral beings of dreaming who travelled over vast areas of the country, performing rituals and creating and shaping specific sites.
He has painted in various locations, including Yayayi and Waruwiya ( outstations of Mt. Liebig) and also at Kintore where he worked alongside artists Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri and Ray James Tjangala and is currently one of the highly regarded Indigenous painters still working with his paintings being collected and exhibited both within and outside Australia.
