About The Artist
Born C.1937 – Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay)
Linda was raised by her mother and stepfather and lived the traditional nomadic lifestyle until approximately the age of eight or nine when the family settled at Haasts Bluff. Linda’s stepfather Lungkata Shorty Tjungurrayi, before he died in 1985 instructed Linda to continue to paint his dreaming and subsequently her two uncles both highly regarded artists – Uta Uta Tjangala and Nosepeg Tjupurrula in 1986 taught Linda to paint.
Linda often paints the Dreaming story of the Tingari and the Spirit Men. The Spirit Men were ancestral beings that roamed the landscape during the Dreamtime or Creation Period.
The Tingari were ancestral spirit beings, which went on very long journeys, creating much of the desert landscape in Central Australia, and instructing the people about law and custom. Linda paints country mostly around Lake MacKay, which has been central to the cultural and spiritual life of the Pintupi people for thousands of years.
