About The Artist
Galya Pwerle was born in the 1930s; at Utopia (approx 350km north east of Alice Springs) The youngest of the sisters which included the world acclaimed indigenous artist the late “Minnie Pwerle”.Galya along with her two other sisters Emily and Molly (both highly talented and recognized individual artists) began their painting career in 2004 encouraged by their niece also a highly renowned artist “Barbara Weir”
Through Barbara’s persuasion they were enticed to put brush to canvas and paint their life experiences. Over the years all three sister have developed their own individual painting style with Galya’s continuing to prove that her style is both inspiring and innovative.
Galya’s paintings depict traditional women’s ceremonies known as “Awelye” which is broadly translated as Women’s Body Painting.
Galya was nominated for a Telstra award in 2005 and 2008 and is currently exhibited widely throughout Australian galleries.
